CHALLENGE  ACCOMPLISHMENT # 4

THE RESOLUTION: Food from around the world

Not all challenges require effort and planning. Some of them are strategically fun and enjoyable. A few even manage to serve as rewards!

With Spring weather in full force, the blazing sunshine and cool breeze finally lured me off my computer chair. Despite living in the downtown dump of a large city in the “armpit” of Ontario, I am shockingly well connected to forest and waterfront trails that run around Lake Ontario and through the Niagara Escarpment all the way to Niagara Falls. It has been quite rewarding discovering these paths to the not-so-hidden natural gems around my city and I always invite April along as entertainment and moral support (walking alone gets boring). On one particular late afternoon I took to the escarpment paths headed east so we could tackle several set stairs connecting downtown to the Hamilton “mountain” for the extra fitness boost I clearly need. (They are gruesome, steep, muscle exhausting stairs which I could barely catch my breath on... meanwhile spunky seniors were doing laps around me.)

Apparently I misplaced my mental map of the second set of stairs to come back down (I never get lost). Silly April trusted me completely and for nearly 5km followed until we nearly reached the next town. Still, there was no stairs and eventually the path ended and we were forced to turn back. We choose an alternate route for added visual stimulation, walking through the perfectly groomed neighborhoods full of old wartime homes. We had been walking for an hour and half and were starving by this point when we came upon a Lebanese restaurant  called La Luna. Instead of punishing me for the massive loop I took us on, April offered to buy dinner as a spontaneous reward. And so another delicious addition to the resolution ‘Food from around world’ is so kindly sponsored by April Beresford.

Our meal:

- Fatier (Spinach Pies)

- A combination plate including shish tawook chicken and grilled chunks of beef with falafel, hummus, mushrooms, fried cauliflower and rice.

- Pita bread

- Tabouli salad

- Baklava for dessert

Thanks April and sorry about those 9.7 kms that made our legs feel twitchy for an hour :)

One woman. One year. 73 down. 96 to go.

Did you know that Hamilton is considered the 'Waterfall Capital of the World'?
