Scholarship submission

CHALLENGE  ACCOMPLISHMENT # 2

THE RESOLUTION: Make something Artsy

One of the hardest challenges of writing is the ability to make an impact all the while being concise. To tell an emotive story within the limits of a 1000 point space count means that every word you print must be worthy of your precious word limit. Every sentence moves the story forward and inspires you to keep reading. Every story becomes an snapshot that captures a moment of my life in this great world and has the potential to catapult me into the extraordinarily tough break-out field of travel journalism.

I briefly mentioned in a recent blog (http://thirteensquared13.blogspot.ca/2013/04/forging-ahead.html) that one of the many projects taking up my valuable time was writing travel scholarship applications. This type of effort clearly forces me to dig deep into my creative potential to bring into being, a story that will not only become a contender for the World Nomads Travel Writing Scholarship but is also worthy of taking the second slot on Thirteen Squared’s resolution list: 13 Arts (& Crafts) Projects

Check out my entry right below or seek it out at http://journals.worldnomads.com/karinas_extraordinary_life/story/100374/Guatemala/Catching-a-Moment-A-coming-together-like-no-other to see my whole World Nomad page (sadly it has not been kept up much). The category I selected was ‘Catching A Moment’.

A WINDOW TO MY JOURNEY OF SELF AND WORLD DISCOVERY
Catching a Moment - A coming together like no other
GUATEMALA | FRIDAY, 19 APRIL 2013 | VIEWS [23] | SCHOLARSHIP ENTRY

I challenge you to find a more beautiful and exciting Christmas tradition anywhere. What I just observed is unrivaled by any city in any country in the world!
Perched up high above the city lights I witnessed the heavens come to life. When 4 million people simultaneously set off firebombs across the night sky it is a delight for all your senses. The smoky sulfur fills you with joy. The streams of whistles, bangs and every decibel explosions from far and wide rattle you deep in your core. The colours and sparkles spread across the atmosphere eventually mingling with the bright lights from a valley of homes and streets. You feel the tingle of amazement and wonder too know that all the souls in this place are sharing this special moment. Transcending the societal hierarchy, from the mansions high above to the slums deep below, everyone; man, woman and child is experiencing this spectacular display just the same.
Guatemala City has carried on this tradition for many years. The start and culmination of it all is at twelve o’clock on the dot and lasts up to an hour. Eventually the sky fills with the smokes of these blazing sights. As it settles like a fog over the valley you can still see glows of the continued showers of coloured fire being shot up into the sky.
I dare you to try to capture this on film. Its grandeur cannot simply be displayed in a photograph. It is something that must be experienced.

I also got to create an entry describing why I am the most worthy winner of this scholarship.

Why I should win:

If I was the ruler of the universe I would create a mandate that every person on earth must complete a year long solo voyage in the world. I ardently believe that some of humanities biggest problems are derivatives of ignorance. Winning this scholarship would create an unmatched opportunity to help me bring the world to those who seek it, and to those who fear it.
I fell love with traveling at a very young age thanks to family of fanatic travel junkies. My pictures and stories have been fascinating all those who have crossed my path. It was not until my university graduation worldwide solo backpacking celebration in 2012 that I truly discovered my talent for writing.
As a diversely experienced traveler in constant search of adventure and cultural immersion, I tend to carry a wealth of information which I share with anyone who will listen. In my writing I take the time to transport the reader to those lands.
I am desperately eager and endlessly excited to learn from the very people whose writing has so often guided me. To improve my skills, make connections with people in the industry and get my work to a wider audience all while traveling in the world would be a dream come true.

One woman. One year. 63 down. 106 to go.
